Removing Trees Without Wrecking the Landscape
Tree Removal in Frankfort usually happens on a property that has had real money and care put into it. The village's median household income was about $140,700 in 2020, nearly three-quarters of households are married couples, and the average household size is 3.42. Lots are often larger than in older suburbs, with finished beds, irrigation, patios and play areas. So the question is rarely just whether a tree can come down. It is whether it can come down without damaging everything around it, and what the yard will look like the day after.
Planning around a finished yard
On a large, landscaped Frankfort lot we usually work through the same questions before quoting:
- Access. Where can equipment enter, and what has to be protected on the way (sprinkler heads, pavers, beds)?
- Drop zone. Is there room to fell the tree, or does it have to come down in sections?
- Heavy wood. Can the trunk be lowered and rolled out, or is a crane from the driveway the safer way?
- Stump. Ground below grade, with grindings removed and the hole filled with soil so you can plant or seed?
- Cleanup. Raked, blown off and hauled, so the yard is ready to use again that day.
Each of those is spelled out in the written estimate.
Frankfort's history and its oldest trees
William Rice made the first permanent settlement here in 1831, and German immigrants built up the community in the 1840s. The township was named for Frankfurt am Main. The Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad reached the area in 1855, the village was platted that March, and it incorporated in 1879. Its historic downtown, around Breidert Green and the Frankfort Grainery, has the oldest houses and some of the oldest trees in the village. Removals there tend to be tighter jobs, close to older homes, garages and fences, and often done in pieces.
Newer neighborhoods
Frankfort had 10,391 residents in 2000 and 17,782 in 2010, a 71% jump in one decade, and 20,296 in 2020. Trees in the subdivisions built during that period are mostly 15 to 25 years old. The most common removals there are ash killed by emerald ash borer, evergreens that crowded each other out, and young trees with weak forks that split in a summer storm. The village sits at about 735 feet, higher than Joliet or the river towns, on open ground where wind has a long run at the trees.
The trail through town
Part of the 22-mile paved Old Plank Road Trail runs through Frankfort. If your yard backs onto the trail, the trees on the trail side are not yours to remove, but branches over your yard can generally be cut back to your property line. We will make sure nothing we take down lands on the path.

Frankfort Questions
Will you protect my sprinkler system and pavers?
Yes, if we know where they are. Flag sprinkler heads and lines before the job, and tell us about pavers, lighting and invisible dog fences. We plan the route around them and use mats where equipment has to cross the lawn.
Can the stump be ground so I can replant in the same spot?
Yes. We grind below grade and can remove the grindings and fill with soil. Replanting directly on an old stump site works best if you shift the new tree a few feet, away from the remaining large roots.
Do you work in the Cook County part of Frankfort?
Yes. Frankfort extends into Cook County, and we work in both the Will and Cook County parts of the village.
How long does a large-lot removal in Frankfort take?
A single mid-sized tree with good access is often done in a few hours, including grinding and cleanup. A large tree that has to come down in sections over a finished yard, or several trees on one property, can take a full day or more. The estimate gives you an idea of the time involved.
Who trims the low branches on the tree by the street in Frankfort?
If the tree is in the parkway, Frankfort Public Works does; call (815) 469-2177 to report branches hanging over the street or sidewalk. The village prunes parkway trees periodically for drivers, walkers and its own trucks. Trees on your side of the sidewalk are yours to maintain.
