Two Generations of Yards
Tree Removal in Shorewood depends a lot on when your house was built. The village incorporated on November 27, 1957, and had just 499 residents in 1960. It grew steadily through the 1970s and 1980s, then jumped from 7,686 people in 2000 to 15,615 in 2010, a 103% increase in ten years. By the 2020 Census it had 18,186 residents and 6,807 housing units. So Shorewood has two very different kinds of yards: older lots with trees that are now 40 to 60 years old, and newer subdivisions where the trees are 15 to 25 years old and just reaching the size where their problems show.
Older lots: big trees, old wounds
On the older streets, the trees we are called about are usually large, and their trouble started long ago. A limb that was topped decades ago sends up a cluster of weakly attached sprouts. A trunk with an old wound has been rotting from the inside. A silver maple that was a nice shade tree in 1975 now has a crown that hangs over two roofs. These are the removals where the work is in the planning: where to set the rigging, how to lower the heavy wood, and how to keep the lawn from getting torn up on the way out.
Newer subdivisions: wrong tree, wrong place
In the 2000s neighborhoods, the problem is more often the planting itself. Common situations:
- Ash trees planted in the parkway or front yard that have since been killed by emerald ash borer
- Evergreens planted along a property line that have grown together into a wall and died out underneath
- Ornamental pears that split in half in a storm, which is a well-known weakness of the species
- Trees set a few feet from the foundation or the patio that are now in the way
These jobs are usually faster than a big old-lot removal, but stump grinding matters more, because the stump is often right in the middle of the lawn or a planting bed.
Storms in Troy Township
Shorewood sits in Troy Township, roughly 39 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop, on open, mostly flat land just west of Joliet. Summer thunderstorms that cross the area can bring strong straight-line winds, and young trees with narrow branch angles are the ones most likely to split. After a storm, we look at what can be saved with a cleanup prune and what has to come down. If a tree or limb is on a power line, call the utility before anyone touches it.
What we ask when you call
When you reach us at (779) 324-4241 or through the form, it helps to tell us: roughly how tall the tree is, what it is near (house, fence, shed, lines), whether a truck can get close, and whether you want the stump ground. Shorewood Questions
Our ornamental pear split in a storm. Can half of it be saved?
Rarely. Callery (Bradford-type) pears grow many limbs from one spot on the trunk, and once a big section tears away, the rest is usually weak too. In most cases removal and a better-suited replacement tree is the safer choice.
How do you protect the lawn on an older Shorewood lot?
We plan the route in and out before the job, use the lightest equipment that will do it safely, and lay down mats on soft ground. Heavy wood is lowered rather than dropped, which also keeps dents out of the yard.
Is it better to remove a row of overgrown evergreens all at once?
It depends on what you want there. If the row has died out underneath and won't fill back in, taking it out in one job and replanting is usually cheaper than piecemeal removals. If privacy matters right away, we can phase it.
