Half a Century of Suburban Trees

Tree Removal in Tinley Park is often about trees that were planted when a neighborhood was new and have now spent 30 to 60 years growing next to the same house. The village was settled in 1853 as Bremen, renamed Tinley Park in 1890 and incorporated on June 27, 1892, by a vote of 34 to 24. For a long time it stayed small: 1,136 residents in 1940. Then it grew through the postwar decades, to 6,392 in 1960, 26,178 in 1980, 37,121 in 1990 and 48,401 in 2000. By 2020 it had 55,971 residents and 22,751 housing units. Each stage of that growth left its own generation of yard trees, and they reach the end of their useful life at different times.

Trees by neighborhood age

1960s and 1970s blocks. The oldest subdivision trees are now big. Silver maples, ash and other fast growers that were popular then can be 60 feet tall with heavy limbs over roofs. Decay at old pruning cuts and weak, included-bark forks are common. Removals here are usually sectional, lowered piece by piece.

1980s and 1990s blocks. Trees are 30 to 40 years old and full-sized. This is where most ash removals happened after emerald ash borer arrived, and where we still find dying ash that were missed. Evergreen screens planted along lot lines have often grown together and died at the bottom.

2000s and later. Trees are younger, and removals are usually about poor placement: too close to the house, under a power line, or a species that splits.

An older, settled population

Census QuickFacts reports that 21.5% of Tinley Park residents are 65 or older and 86.9% of homes are owner-occupied, with an average household of 2.45 people and a median owner-occupied value of about $299,900. Many owners have been in the same home for decades. When the tree they planted when they moved in finally needs to come down, they want it done carefully, with the lawn and gardens protected and everything cleaned up after.

Two counties, one village

Most of Tinley Park is in Cook County, in Bremen, Orland and Rich townships, but part of it extends into Frankfort Township in Will County. It borders Oak Forest, Orland Park, Orland Hills, Mokena, Country Club Hills, Matteson, Frankfort and Frankfort Square. We work on both sides of the county line.

Before the work starts

A few things worth knowing:

  • If the tree is in the parkway between the sidewalk and the street, ask the village whether it is a public tree first.
  • If any wires run through the tree, tell us. Never cut near a primary power line yourself.
  • If you have an underground sprinkler or dog fence, flag it.
  • Decide whether you want the stump ground, and whether you want the grindings left or hauled.

Tinley Park Questions

My silver maple is 50 years old and huge. Does it have to come down?

Not necessarily. If it is sound, a reduction prune can take weight off the limbs over the house. If it has a cracked fork, large dead limbs or decay at the base, removal is usually the safer choice. We will tell you which.

Do you work in the Will County part of Tinley Park?

Yes. We work throughout the village, in both the Cook County and Will County sections.

Can you remove a tree that's growing under the power line in my backyard?

We can remove trees near service drops to your house with care. If the tree touches a primary line on the poles, the utility has to make it safe first. Call them before any work near those lines.

How long does a typical Tinley Park removal take?

A medium-sized backyard tree with reasonable access is often done in a few hours, including chipping and cleanup. A large tree over the house that has to come down in pieces can take most of a day. Stump grinding is usually quick once the tree is down.
